Saudi Arabia Ratifies the International Labour Convention to Enhance Occupational Safety and Health

His Excellency the Minister of Human Resources and Social Development, Eng. Ahmed bin Sulaiman Al-Rajhi, met with the Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO), Mr. Gilbert Houngbo, at the United Nations Palace in Geneva. During the meeting, His Excellency handed over the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's ratification document for ILO Convention No. 187 on the Promotional Framework for Occupational Safety and Health.

Discussions on Developing Labor Policies

The two sides reviewed the latest developments in labor markets, emphasizing the importance of joint efforts to develop effective policies to protect workers' rights and regulate labor relations. These discussions come in light of the continuous and rapid changes in the world of work, requiring international cooperation to ensure a safe and healthy working environment.

Saudi Achievements in Occupational Safety and Health

His Excellency highlighted the Kingdom's significant achievements in occupational safety and health. He also emphasized the importance of the partnership with the ILO, praising its active participation in the first edition of the International Labor Market Conference. This reflects the fruitful cooperation between the Kingdom and the ILO in achieving shared goals.

Meeting Attendees

The meeting was attended by the Kingdom's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Ambassador Abdulmohsen bin Khothaila, Dr. Ruba Jaradat, ILO Regional Director for Arab States, and several officials from both sides. This high-level attendance underscores the Kingdom's strong commitment to enhancing international cooperation in various labor fields.

Importance of the Convention

ILO Convention No. 187 has recently become one of the essential conventions according to the ILO classifications. This convention holds significant importance in setting frameworks and principles for occupational safety and health, including a national policy, program, and system for occupational safety and health in the member state. Saudi Arabia's ratification of this convention is an extension of its pioneering efforts at the national level, including a range of reforms and initiatives aimed at developing an attractive and competitive labor market. It also reaffirms the Kingdom's proactive role in aligning with international labor standards to provide a healthy and safe working environment for all workers.
