Worker Rights in labor law: Article 70 and Work Protection

Within the framework of safeguarding worker rights and ensuring justice in the workplace, Article 70 of the Saudi Labor Law delineates disciplinary procedures against employees, emphasizing the prohibition of misuse of authority by employers or their responsible managers.

According to this article, imposing disciplinary penalties on workers for actions committed outside the workplace is prohibited unless those actions are directly related to work itself, the employer, or the responsible manager. This means that workers are protected from arbitrary imposition of disciplinary sanctions for actions outside the scope of work, unless they impact work performance or the workplace.

Regarding fines, the article prohibits fines exceeding the value of five days' wages and restricts imposing multiple penalties for a single violation to prevent excessive or cumulative punishments. Additionally, it prohibits deducting fines from workers' wages beyond five days' pay per month, ensuring stability for workers and shielding them from unjust financial pressure.

Concerning unpaid suspensions from work, the article stipulates that the duration of such suspensions should not exceed five days per month, ensuring that the suspension period is limited and proportionate to the committed offense, without imposing unjustifiable financial burdens on workers.

Thus, Article 70 of the Saudi Labor Law functions to establish a fair and stable work environment, preserving worker rights and shielding them from abuse and exploitation, thereby contributing to economic growth and social stability in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
